As a project in my IxD studio class, we were tasked with creating a future experience taking place in the year 2200 after the ice caps have melted and enveloped the world in water.
The only constraints were that the final experiences had to take place within the confines of our studio space – incredibly broad and incredibly fun.
My role was to create and animate the 3D underwater environment, build the AR app onto iOS devices and assist with helmet, set, and story design.
Place: California College of the Arts
Team members: You-wen Liang and Dave Tipton.
Duration: 3 week
Tools: Rhino, Maya, Unity3D, Vuforia, Xcode.
With a brief this broad, my team members and I got together with a white board and went to town on crafting a story. After we had a loose story line together we then switched gears to asking ourselves three things: What were we good at, what did we want to learn, and what could we pull off in under three weeks.
1. Craft the story and the experience.
2. Figure out what tools we needed to use and then learn how to use them.
3. Divide and conquer.
4. Give people the experience of stepping into another world.
It's the year 2100, the polar ice caps have melted, the world has been flooded, and resources have become scarce. Researchers believe they have found a power source deep within the Mariana's trench, but man is unable to reach the necessary depths due to the increased distance and pressure brought on by the raised water levels. Their only hope is by remotely inhabiting avatars that can withstand the hostile conditions. All goes well until they run into an unexpected guest...
1. Put on the helmet and step into the chamber.
2. Wait for the transport and enter a new world.
3. Explore the world.
4. Avoid the Kaluza.-
